Rooted, Not Rushed: What Earth Day Teaches Us About Healing Burnout in Uncertain Times

There was a tree my husband had to pull out this weekend.

Not a small one. Not something that came out easily. It was rooted deeply into the ground, resistant in a way that made you pause and respect it. (We had to get a Truck and Towing material to get it out)

I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

What would it look like if we were grounded in our lives and careers in that same way?

Because right now, many high-achieving Black and Brown professionals are being asked to do the opposite.

Across industries, layoffs are not just happening—they are landing unevenly. BIPOC professionals, especially those who have worked hard to secure stability, are often among the first impacted. The loss isn’t just financial. It disrupts identity, safety, and the sense of “I did everything right, so why this?”

And when that happens, our systems respond quickly.

We shift into survival mode.We overproduce. We disconnect from ourselves to stay employable, relevant, and “ahead.”

But here’s what I keep coming back to, especially on Earth Day:

Unsustainable systems—whether in the workplace or in the body—eventually demand our attention.

Earth nestled among rocks and plants with two trees, one pink and one white, under a vibrant purple sky, creating a serene scene.

The Cost of Living Unrooted

In my reflection earlier today, I named something that felt important:

We’ve been taught to build careers the same way harmful systems treat the planet.

Extract more. Rest less. Ignore the warning signs. Keep producing.

And then we wonder why we feel burned out, disconnected, and exhausted.

For many of us, there are parts of our internal system working overtime right now:

  • The hustle part that says, “Keep going. You don’t have time to slow down.”

  • The survival part that scans for the next threat, the next loss, the next instability

  • The exiled part holding fear, grief, and disappointment, especially when layoffs or workplace harm hit close to home

  • And the quieter Self energy—curious, compassionate, grounded—that often gets drowned out in the noise

Nature offers a different model.

Not urgency.Not constant output.But rhythm.

Nature as a Regulating Tool (Not Just a Metaphor)

The earth does not rush its process, and yet everything gets done.

Trees do not produce fruit all year.Soil is not always in bloom. There are seasons for growth, and there are seasons for restoration.

Your system is asking for the same.

When we intentionally engage with nature, even in small ways, we give our nervous system a cue: you are safe enough to slow down.

This is not about abandoning ambition. It’s about creating sustainability so your success does not cost you your wellbeing.

Tools to Move from Survival Mode to Self Energy

1. Grounding Practice: Regulate Before You ReactStep outside, even if it’s just for 5 minutes. Place both feet firmly on the ground.Ask yourself: What am I holding right now that feels urgent?

Let your body answer before your mind does.

2. Parts Check-In (IFS-Informed Reflection)Identify who is leading your system today:

  • Is it the overworking part trying to outrun fear?

  • The anxious part scanning for the next disruption?

  • The shut-down part that feels exhausted?

Then gently ask: What does this part need from me right now?

This creates space for Self energy to lead instead of survival.

3. Nature-Based Reset RitualChoose one consistent ritual each week:

  • Sitting under a tree without your phone

  • Taking a slow walk and intentionally noticing color, texture, sound

  • Watering plants and staying present in the act

This is less about the activity and more about practicing connection without performance.

4. Redefine Productivity Through SeasonsInstead of asking, “What can I produce today?” try asking:

  • What season am I in right now?

  • Is this a season of growth, maintenance, or rest?

Not every moment is meant for expansion.

5. Community as EcosystemNature thrives through interdependence. So do we.

Survival mode often tells us to isolate and “figure it out alone.”But healing—and sustainability—requires connection.

Reach out. Let yourself be supported. Let yourself be seen outside of what you produce.

Earth Day Playlist: Rooted & Regulated

Journal Prompts

  • Where in my life am I operating from survival instead of alignment?

  • Which part of me has been the loudest lately? What is it trying to protect me from?

  • What would it look like to be rooted instead of rushed in this season of my life?

  • How can I honor rest without attaching guilt or fear to it?

  • What does sustainability look like for me beyond just “getting through” this moment?

A Closing Reflection

That tree didn’t come out easily because it wasn’t meant to.

It was rooted.

And maybe that’s the invitation for us, especially now:

To build lives and careers that are not easily shaken by systems that were never designed with us in mind.

To create rhythms that honor both our ambition and our humanity.

To remember that rest is not the opposite of growth. It is part of it.

And to trust that when we are grounded—truly grounded—we don’t have to chase stability.

We become it.
